Which Telegram build should I install on my computer?
Windows users should install Telegram Desktop from the Windows page for the full native experience. Mac users get a Swift-native macOS client that even supports Secret Chats. If you can't install software (public PC, work laptop), open Telegram Web straight in the browser instead.
Is Telegram safe? How is it encrypted?
Cloud chats are encrypted in transit and at rest using MTProto. Secret Chats add device-to-device end-to-end encryption with optional self-destruct timers. For maximum security enable two-step verification, biometric app-lock and regularly review active sessions.
Do I need a phone number to sign up for Telegram?
You need a phone number to receive the initial login code. After that, you can hide the number from other users in Privacy settings and communicate through a public username. Anonymous numbers are also available through the Fragment platform.
What is the difference between Telegram Web and the installed apps?
Telegram Web runs in any browser tab without installing anything, ideal for public or work computers. Installed apps are faster, always-on, and support extras like Secret Chats and calls in every environment. Both share the same cloud, so messages sync instantly.
Can I use Telegram on multiple devices at the same time?
Yes — Telegram is designed for multi-device use. Sign in with the same number on your phone, tablet, laptop and browser and every message appears everywhere in real time. Review active sessions any time from Settings → Devices.
What happens to my chats if I uninstall or lose my phone?
All cloud chats stay safe on Telegram's servers. Simply install the app on a new device, sign in with the same phone number and your entire history reappears. Only Secret Chats — which are stored only on the original device — cannot be recovered.
My login code is not arriving — what should I do?
Make sure you typed the number in international format with the correct country code. If SMS is slow, wait for the option to receive the code as a phone call. If Telegram is already installed on another device, the code will arrive inside the app there. Also check that your carrier isn't blocking short-code SMS.
How do I keep the Telegram APK safe on Android?
Only download the APK from the direct-link Android page and let Telegram auto-update itself afterward. Verify the signing certificate belongs to Telegram FZ-LLC. Avoid modded builds like 'Telegram Plus' from unofficial sources — they are the number-one cause of hijacked Telegram accounts.
